DEWALT TSTAK vs ToughSystem 2.0: Which Fits Your Workshop?

Compare DEWALT TSTAK and ToughSystem 2.0 by tool fit, access, adapters, transport, and the cost of a complete workshop storage setup.

DEWALT TSTAK vs ToughSystem 2.0: Which Fits Your Workshop?

Choose TSTAK for compact, portable project kits in a sheltered home workshop. Choose ToughSystem 2.0 when the larger modules, transport options, and specific protection features solve a problem you actually have. Buying the larger system because it looks tougher can leave you lifting a bulky box of mostly empty space; buying the smaller one without measuring your tools can force an expensive restart.

TSTAK: a sensible size for a project kit

The TSTAK DWST17806 ↗ has a lift-out tray, carrying handle, and side connections for stacking. Its practical advantage is a simple layout: frequently used accessories on the tray, larger items underneath. That works well when the whole kit goes to one job and comes home together.

The DEWALT product page identifies the model. DEWALT's internal-dimension reference gives the deep box's interior as 360 × 270 × 240 mm. That is a better starting point than the outside width printed on a sales listing.

Before buying, draw that rectangle on cardboard and place your largest tool inside it in the orientation you intend to use. Include the battery if it stays attached. Then allow space to get your fingers around the handle and to route a charger cord. A tool that fits only diagonally may leave awkward pockets for every other item.

The tray is useful only if you want the items below it less often. If you repeatedly remove a loaded tray to retrieve the same drill, divide the kit between a shallow box and a deeper one, or compare drawers instead. Stackability does not automatically produce convenient access.

ToughSystem 2.0: buy the module, not just the family name

DEWALT publishes external dimensions for ToughSystem 2.0 modules. The DWST08165 small box, for example, is approximately 21.26 inches wide, 14.63 inches deep, and 7.02 inches high. These are outside dimensions, so do not compare them directly with TSTAK's internal measurements and conclude that a particular tool will fit. Check the DWST08165 small box on Amazon ↗.

A useful smaller purchase within the larger family is the DWST08020 deep compact organizer ↗. It is an organizer, not a substitute for a full-width toolbox. Choose it when small components need their own removable module rather than the bottom of a power-tool box.

The larger platform makes more sense if you have already planned where full-size boxes, drawers, or a rolling base will live. Mark the complete stack's footprint on your garage floor. Check whether a vehicle hatch closes with the transport handle folded, and whether you can remove the upper module without hitting a shelf. Those checks matter more than owning the most impressive-looking tower.

For any quoted load or ingress-protection rating, verify the exact module's current manual. An organizer, open tote, drawer unit, and lidded box should not be treated as equally sealed because their connecting feet match.

Can TSTAK and ToughSystem connect together?

They are separate interfaces. DEWALT's compatibility notice identifies the DWST08017 adapter as the bridge between supported products. Check its current instructions for which unit goes above or below and which organizer families it accepts. Do not buy two incompatible stacks expecting the side latches to line up.

An adapter can preserve an existing investment, but it also introduces an extra component to carry and store. If you own one small TSTAK case, compare the adapter plus new base system with staying in TSTAK. If you already own several full project kits, preserving them may have more value. The decision depends on what you own, not brand loyalty.

Compare a working setup, not two empty-box prices

Make a shopping list with three columns: what must travel, what remains at the bench, and what needs frequent access. Add the actual module for each task, then include a rolling base, adapter, organizers, foam, locks, and any mounting hardware. Compare current totals using the same amount of useful storage.

A deep box may cost less than two drawers yet be slower for frequent small-tool retrieval. A drawer module may organize tools neatly but use space that a circular saw needs as one uninterrupted cavity. Buy the layout that matches the contents; adding foam later cannot correct an unsuitable compartment shape.

Use our modular-system overview if you are still comparing brands, and PACKOUT drawers versus toolboxes for the access tradeoff. For a shop that rarely transports tools, a rolling cabinet may be the better format.

Questions to settle before ordering

Is TSTAK waterproof?

Do not assume a family-wide waterproof rating. Check the exact model and regional version for a gasket and published protection specification. A lid that closes is not evidence that a case can be left outside in rain.

Will a large cordless saw fit in the deep box?

Measure the actual tool, battery, and accessories against internal dimensions. Overall case measurements, photographs with a different saw, and a box's advertised volume cannot establish fit.

Should I start with a complete tower?

Start with one representative module if your layout is uncertain. Load it with real tools and use it before committing to a larger stack. A bundle is useful only when its components match your storage needs.

Does a foam insert make every TSTAK box equivalent?

No. Foam occupies space and is often model-specific. DEWALT lists particular compatible models for its inserts. Check the foam-insert buying guide before ordering.

For most sheltered home shops, we would start with the smallest TSTAK kit that fits the job. Move to ToughSystem 2.0 when its particular modules and transport arrangement justify the extra footprint. Check the TSTAK deep box ↗ and ToughSystem small toolbox ↗ as examples, then verify the exact selected variant at checkout. Product photos are catalog images, not hands-on test photographs.
